I cried over a cake

I have this compulsion to bake when things get tough...or good....or when people need love,  or comfort,  or congratulations.  Basically any excuse to bake.
Well the amazing grocery team at publix busted it to get their neighborhood ready for Hurricane Irma, so I figured who needs comfort and appreciation more than them.  So I baked a cake.

Or I tried to.

I've pretty much perfected my execution of grandma's pound cake and I don't even have to look at the recipe anymore. Softened butter goes in the mixer,  I preheat the oven and start sifting the dry ingredients... It's all muscle memory at this point.  It's a ballet. The oven is perfectly preheated right as I finish pouring the batter,  basically.

Then I have 90 minutes to get the kitchen cleaned up,  and relax.  This was awesome for enforced studying back when the CPA exams were looming.  A 90 minute block where I couldn't doze off for fear of burning that perfection.

Grandma's pound cake.  Not mine.  Grandma's.  I practically had to torture her to get the full recipe from her.  It's not mine. My siblings and mom started calling it mine a couple of years ago and that's a sore spot for me.

Anyway... I baked this cake and it was beautiful... took it out of the oven, the crust was a masterpiece.   A few minutes later H walks into the kitchen and asks what's wrong with the cake?
Goddammit, don't play with me asshole, that cake is the perfect balance of science and art.  I'll cut you if you're fucking with me.

I go into the kitchen and... the cake fell. The crust was still up high,  but the inner ring was flat.  I never mess up the cake.  I'm blaming the atmospheric pressure changes... fucking Irma. I cried... hid it well,  but I honest to goodness shed tears over a fallen pound cake.

So publix didn't get their appreciation cake.  But my family was cool with that.  They've demolished my ugly cake.

So tomorrow,  H will be taking a beautiful,  perfect pound cake to work with him.  Those boys really were heroic and deserve to be recognized.
