my kid and i are frigging MAGICIANS!
Happiest place on earth, you expect what, exactly? Long lines, crowds, gates-of-hell heat, spoiled rotten kids, tired parents.... total negativity that you have to work hard to break through with a pickax and brute force to get to the two or three tiny nuggets of pure joy for the low low price of a grand or so for a family of 4. More if you stay on property or don't live in Florida.... or both.
I stood back and enjoyed the magic. Kept my calm.... bathed in the heat and sweat and brushed off the attitudes around me.
My teen actually giggled when meeting Kylo Ren. She was giddy and, as a result, so was I. The girls also had a lightsaber fight on the walk between two of the activities we enjoyed. They were smiling and having a great time. And I loved every minute of it.
We were doing pin trading - like an Easter egg hunt for you non-Disney readers (all none of you). The teen was laser sighted on all of the lanyards and pin pouches- especially if they had star wars or Alice in Wonderland pins. We ran across three cast members in one of the small open gift shops on our way to go to Star Tours. One of the cast members was jazzed about a pin on another's pin pouch. It was a cool Disney half marathon folding pin. Turns out she collects pins with moving parts or those pins that open and close like books.
The teen traded for the pin and gave it to the cast member. She was over the moon happy over getting the pin and my teen had a massive smile for having made this cast member's day. The cast member literally jumped up and down in utter glee. I couldn't be more proud of my kid.
Later on, riding the bus between the park and the resort (yes, I sound like a pretentious asshole... "the resort"), I started up a conversation with a family - grandparents and a little girl. The grandpa had been planning the trip since the child was a little baby. I asked if she knew about pin trading and I got her started by giving her a couple of my pins I hadn't traded yet. The teen joined in and handed her easily a half dozen pins. And then we told her how to find cast members to trade with - even at the resort. Her eyes got really big and she seemed to be excited about the extra fun she was going to have that night and the next day.
Magic made... and we honored the memory of my best friend (and former disney cast member) that passed over a year ago.
I had a couple of times when I had a hard time breathing because of the crowds... but I went with the flow and kept my eyes open for the magic. Which is kind of what I need to learn to do on a daily basis.
I have people in my life that make magic for me. Mostly it's those people that draw the teen out of her shell (..i'm looking at you, Mr. Handsome Charming [yadda yadda] Bass Guitar Instructor - you're making a difference in her life). My kids are my life, so being good with them puts me in a good mood.
Divorce is going to be tough, but I'm going to treat it like Disney and keep looking for the magic while I go with the flow.
See the magic around you!
